The formulas

Every conversion uses a fixed factor. Since 1959 the inch is defined as exactly 2.54 cm, so all imperial lengths have exact metric values.

  • cm to inches: divide by 2.54
  • inches to cm: multiply by 2.54
  • feet to meters: multiply by 0.3048 (1 ft = 12 in)
  • miles to km: multiply by 1.609344 (1 mi = 5,280 ft)
